What is Gopher?

A menu to the early Internet

Created at the University of Minnesota in 1991, Gopher made information on different computers feel like one browsable collection. Choose a menu item, open a document, search a directory, or jump to another server. You did not need to remember where every file lived.

It was built for distributing, finding, and retrieving information: campus resources, reference material, text, and downloadable files. Its simple menus worked across different computers and slow connections. The protocol was documented in RFC 1436 in March 1993.

Then the Web took off

Gopher organised browsing around menus. The World Wide Web used HTML documents with links embedded in the content, giving publishers a more flexible canvas. CERN released its Web software into the public domain in April 1993, helping the Web spread. Gopher became a smaller corner of the Internet, still explored by enthusiasts today.

What if Gopher had won?

An alternate history, not a prediction. If Gopher had become the dominant publishing system—or HTML had never arrived—going online might feel more like visiting a vast library than walking through a shopping mall. Consistent menus, compact documents, and search could matter more than elaborate page layouts. Slow connections and older computers might stay useful for longer.

But a quieter Internet would not be guaranteed. Advertising, tracking, and powerful gatekeepers could still grow around directories and search. Demand for pictures, shopping, and interactive tools would probably push Gopher toward extensions, separate apps, or a new rival. We might eventually invent something much like the Web, just by a different route.

Start here

Floodgap

A crossroads of Gopherspace: introductions, client software, archives, and directories of other servers.

First stop: Try “Getting started with gopher, software, more”, then follow a directory to another server.

gopher://gopher.floodgap.com/1/

Find something

Veronica-2

A search engine for Gopher menu titles. Results lead to real documents and directories across different servers.

First stop: Enter a word such as “moon” at the search prompt. Titles can be surprising; they are not full-text search results.

gopher://gopher.floodgap.com/7/v2/vs

Read & learn

Gopherpedia

A Gopher interface to Wikipedia, with article search and featured reading. Modern knowledge delivered through a very small interface.

First stop: Choose “Search Gopherpedia” and look up a favourite animal, invention, or planet.

gopher://gopherpedia.com/1/

People & personal pages

SDF

A public-access UNIX community with personal Gopher spaces, computing documents, and phlogs: blogs published through Gopher.

First stop: Open “SDF GOPHERSPACE” for personal sites, or “SDF PHLOGOSPHERE” to browse journals. These are independently written pages.

gopher://sdf.org/1/

Archives & older documents

Quux

An archive with books, computing material, reference collections, and preserved files. Dates matter here: old “current” events are historical material.

First stop: Read “About This Server”, then explore Books or Computers. See how a library feels when its shelves are menus.

gopher://gopher.quux.org/1/

A small surprise

Phase of the Moon

A real Gopher service at Mozz.us that draws the Moon using text characters and shows lunar-phase information.

First stop: Look for the lunar outline and phase labels. This is a response from the remote server, not an animation added by this terminal.

gopher://mozz.us/1/apps/moon

Play over Gopher

World of Solitaire

A real remote card-game service: the server draws a text board and offers each available move as a menu link.

First stop: Choose Klondike, then scroll to Available Actions below the board. Use those links to play; the cards themselves are not clickable.

gopher://worldofsolitaire.com/1/

Puzzles & probability

Monty Hall

A three-door probability experiment hosted at Mozz.us, with a car, goats, and the choice to stay or switch.

First stop: Read the short introduction and choose “Play the game!”. Each decision is another Gopher menu.

gopher://mozz.us/1/apps/montyhall

Codes & communication

Morse Code Generator

A small remote tool that accepts a message using Gopher’s search mechanism.

First stop: Select “Enter your message”, type a short word, and press Enter to send it to the generator.

gopher://mozz.us/1/apps/morsecode

An online recipe box

MOAR recipe archive

Ben Collver’s Massive Online Archive of Recipes, with search and browsing by region or type of dish.

First stop: Browse by dish type or choose a random recipe. A practical use for a menu-based Internet.

gopher://tilde.pink/1/~bencollver/recipes/

Science in plain text

Periodic Table

A text periodic table with a browsable element directory, hosted by Ben Collver.

First stop: Choose “List All” to explore the elements. The opening diagram is a reference, not a grid of clickable buttons.

gopher://tilde.pink/1/~bencollver/periodic/

Retro gaming reference

GameFAQs Archive

An archive of game guides organised by platform. Walkthroughs are a natural fit for text browsing.

First stop: Choose “Browse game platforms”, then look for a system you remember—or one older than you.

gopher://tilde.pink/1/~bencollver/gamefaqs/

Discover more servers

The Gopher Lawn

Bitreich’s subject directory, with categories including ASCII art, books, vintage computing, cooking, and games.

First stop: Pick a category and follow a link to another server. This directory is maintained by Bitreich, separately from our guide.

gopher://bitreich.org/1/lawn

Technology discussions

Hacker News over Gopher

A text mirror of Hacker News with a live-feed menu and an archive of earlier discussions.

First stop: Open “Live Feed” for recent listings or browse the archive. Check timestamps; external article links may open on the Web.

Digital preservation

Endangered Software Society

A preservation-oriented server with sections for software media, games, Gopher, and the 1990s Web.

First stop: Read “About”, then explore “90s Web” or “Software Media Preservation”. Some entries are downloads rather than readable documents.
